Weight Training?

Question by Jacquelyn: Weight Training?
I am interested in building muscle (mostly in my thighs, abs, ankles, and maybe arms). I am dancer, but I feel like at home I should do some more workouts. I am 14, and wanted to know how to weight train. I heard about it, but I wanted to know exactly what is was, how to do it, ect.???

In my experience, women are usually looking for definition more than anything. As a dancer you should already be in good shape but for abs you could do crunches, sit-ups, pilates, yoga, there’s a lot of options out there.

For your legs you should start running or cycling for endurance cause as a dancer you’re gonna need it. You’ll get great thighs with cycling.

…..there are no “ankle” workouts that I know of

As for arms you don’t really need any serious training. Use light weight between 5-8 pounds and do some bicep curls and triceps extensions. You won’t need to increases the weight too quickly. What you want to do is increase the number of repetitions you do and decrease the amount of rest in between sets.

You can also grab those light dumbbells and run with them. While you won’t notice, running with weight will work your abs because your core is stabilizing your body while you run.

All of these activities will add more endurance then strength and you’ll definitely build definition. Just stick to a good diet. Preferably one low in fat and rich in fruits and veggies.

You won’t need a lot of protein. You’re adding definition not building muscle like a guy.

If this sounds like gibberish or if you’re confused about something then drop me an email.

Good luck!
