Q&A: What weight should females lift?
Question by Kristin: What weight should females lift?
I’m trying to tone up and lose a bit of fat. I’m 137Ibs, 5ft 7.5in, and I’m pretty weak and out of shape. My trainer had me using 10 Ib weights for chest presses (whatever you call them), squats and biceps and 12 Ib for some side/back muscle.
I thought 3-5 Ibs was adequate for toning female muscles…She said because I’m female, I couldn’t get huge muscles…but she has huge arms (she’s a figure competitor and lifts more than many guys in there…she’s thick!

3-5 lbs is too small to be worth using, 10-15 lbs weights will give you good results with fewer reps but will not build huge muscles, just like your trainer says. 10-12 is still very light, but it will give you good results and build lean muscle.
While you CAN get huge muscles as a female, you’d have to work very hard to get it, and what you are doing will give you toned muscles instead.
